KATIE DOHERTY AND THE NAVIGATORS
Katie Doherty formed the Navigators in 2018. With Dave Gray on melodeon and Grace Smith on fiddle, their power and dynamic is often described as much bigger than its component parts. Katie’s songs hang on the precipice of the current state of the world. There is enormous heart filled hope but there is much riding on where we go from here. The songs paint sweeping pictures and intricate portraits of NHS Workers, Musicians, Teachers, Artists, Protesters and Parents. They are rooted in a craggy North East landscape looking outwards across the sea, with a telescopic lens pointing firmly up, out and forward to the best future possible. The music exudes heart, warmth and melody which leaves you feeling up-lifted and welcomed.
Their latest album ‘FLOW’ produced by Mattie Foulds (Karine Polwart, Rachel Newton, Adam Holmes and The Embers) entered the Official Folk Chart Top 40. Their 2019 album ‘And Then’ led them to live sessions on BBC Radio 2’s Mark Radcliffe Show and BBC Radio 3 In-Tune. They toured nationally taking in Sage Gateshead, Cambridge Folk Festival, Manchester Folk Festival and Cheltenham Festival to name a few.
Tutored by the master of melodeon, Andy cutting, Dave Gray travels the world with fusion group Världens band, lending his inimitable infectious, energy and joy to any music he touches...
Grace Smith is a fiddle and viola player, and dedicated music educator. Her band, the Grace Smith Trio, released their debut album Overleaf in Autumn 2023 which has had a great critical reception. In their review of Overleaf, Folk Radio UK said; “If you’re looking for the exciting future of instrumental folk music, you need search no further.” She can also be seen playing with French-inspired dance band, Cri du Canard, and with Katie Doherty & The Navigators.
